Is it alright to be forgotten?

Memory loss or forgetfulness can be a tricky thing. If it happens naturally, you can suspect certain impairments but if one decides to forget in deliberation – then what? It all comes down to the matter of trust, faith, what to believe and what to ignore. So the question that we can put forward is how far will you go to protect what is right and wrong? Since everything is available at the click of a mouse, how safe can you actually feel in the global jungle?

A new addition for European citizen to protect their identity and safeguard information from the global audience termed as ‘Right to Be Forgotten’ has been doing the rounds and has been quite a topic of discussion on the online safety and privacy measures. The search engine giant Google is now compelled to follow the ruling of the courts in the European Union countries. According to the ruling in the case of “Google Spain SL, Google Inc. vs. Agencia Espanola de Proteccion de Datos, Mario Costeja Gonzalez” in May 2014, the search engine should delete outdated or misinformation about an individual residing in the EU as of now.

Dismay has been reflected by Google since it will restrict information and cause information censorship. To quote Google chief executive Larry Page “trying now to be more European and think about (data collection) maybe more from a European context”. Since this upsurge numerous requests have come from people residing in EU and about 31% of it is related to frauds and scams. Till date there has been no stated timeline to remove such indiscreet links or content and the other search engines like Yahoo, Bing may also have to follow the same route of giving out private individual information in Europe. Though it has to comply by the rulings but Google will look into the information for the sake of public interest.

The Europeans have the right to be forgotten and can compel Google to remove results of queries associated with a person’s name if the results are irrelevant, inadequate or excessive. This surge may have started in Europe can in no time reach out in other countries. And if it does we will be helpless. So in order to avoid such issues, it is better to practice self censorship so that no misleading, irrelevant or inappropriate information or photos are available to the global audience. After all it is better to be safe than sorry.
